I have to replace parking brake shoes on my truck tonight. The actual brake is disk, but inside the rotor are parking brake shoes...
I hate drum brakes and everything to do with them. You pull one itty bitty part out and the whole thing goes kablooey - Wait where did that come from? How does it go back?

It’s funny how I can tell a bunch of things about the brake setup from the picture of the parts, and by funny I mean horrifying. I never wanted to do enough drum brakes for that - how did this happen?

Some engineer said - I shall design brakes that have a spring associated with every part.
Some PartyPooper’s mission in life is to find said engineer and introduce him to a brick... right to his face

Take apart only one side... that way if something goes kablooey, you have the other side to use as a reference on how to put it back together.

yeah... Thats’ what I will do... but then I get to do the other side and I’ll have to look at the shitty job I did on the first one... and I’ll forever doubt my brakes

If you find him and the above kit is truly what is going on, please write my username on the brick. Bent retainer pin, spring washer on the adjuster pivot, spring clips on the lower end of the retainer pins, adjuster spring(?!)... YOU ASSHOLE

it really IS like that. I think it’s fairly straight forward though. Worst case scenario is that I can’t put it back together and drive around without e-brake... till I can get it to someone who knows what they are doing

Ugh. Drums. I’m avoiding doing them on the Cougar, rather just do a disc swap. The last ones I did were also inside the parking brake assembly on my long since departed Volvo.

I had a suburban with e-brake as drums inside a disk rotor.
Well, wouldn’t you know it... if your car is going faster than snail, those e-brakes fall apart immediately. They aren’t rated for e-brake duty... just parking.

its not so bad if you have the proper little tools,
but if you only have a couple screwdrivers, and pliers, its gonna really suck.

dude, Harbor freight!!!
did you get brand name tools or something?!
i remember my friends all getting snap on, mac, matco, and cornwell...
i thought they were nuts! Even with the 50% off discount we had with snap on for our automotive program.

idk... I dont think they were brand tools, but for 35 bucks i get like 8 tools in a case. Chances of me losing entire case are like 22%. Chances of me losing one tool are like 87%

what do you have to do to your handbrake?
do you have a drum in hat setup in the rear or something?
